The Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) establishes the framework for a national system of solid waste control.

The Waste Act, 2008 (Act No.59 of 2008) is the primary law regulating waste management in South Africa.

EU waste policy aims to protect the environment and human health and help the EU’s transition to a circular economy. It sets objectives and targets to

• improve waste management
• stimulate innovation in recycling
• limit landfilling

The first National Waste Policy was published in 2009. An updated National Waste Policy was published in 2018.
