This white paper prepared by IFC, Harnessing Energy from the Sun, is therefore a timely initiative. It addresses the growing interest of developing countries to use grid-connected rooftop solar PV initiatives to provide green power access to large numbers of people, and to review the use of private participation to support their dissemination.

It draws lessons from selected global experiences in designing and implementing rooftop solar photovoltaic systems, identifying some success drivers and potential challenges in implementing these projects. Finally, it also looks at some of the fundamental steps to successful project preparation to enable private sector participation, based on the case study of the rooftop solar program piloted in Gujarat, India.
